What to consider before involving children?

Eurochild Hungarian member Hintalovon shares child participation resources and practical guidelines

  • With Children For Children: The practices for involving children of the member organizations of the Child Participation Working Group

The publication was published by the Child Participation Working Group of the Hungarian NGO Coalition on the Rights of the Child. It describes activities which try to change the children’s own environment or societal attitudes and wants to inspire other organisations to involve children and share their good practices as well.

The publication introduces the joint work with children of the following organisations: Hintalovon Child Rights Foundation, Kék Vonal Children’s Crisis Foundation, UNICEF Hungarian Committee Foundation, SOS Children’s Village Hungarian Foundation, the National Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SINOSZ), Háttér Society, and InDaHouse Hungary Association. Every organisation has a different approach to achieving its child participation goals. Also available in Hungarian.

In this report, the organisation describes how they involved 40 children in their work via 3 main structures: the Ambassadors of Children’s Rights, the children’s advisory team and the consultations with volunteers. Hintalovon helped the European Council gather the views of children and create recommendations to Member States on parental separation and care proceedings, they took part in the activities of the Eurochild Children's Council, they produced several videos and podcasts with children, participated in the 14th European Forum on the Rights of the Child and the UN consultation on women’s rights, and much more. Read all their achievements!

This document gives adults working with children inputs on the following issues:

  • whether it is a good idea to involve children in a project,
  • what to clarify with co-workers and partners,
  • what responsibilities adults have,
  • what methodological questions should be adressed,
  • what are the ethical considerations to take into account
