Webinar on Promoting the Rights of Children in Migration through the EU Budget

An expert round-table at the European Parliament on 5 December, followed by an open webinar on 12 December, will discuss how the rights of children in migration can be promoted in the next EU budget.

On 5 December 2019, Eurochild, along with Save the Children Europe and Terres des Hommes International Federation, will convene an expert roundtable at the European Parliament in collaboration with Spanish MEP Javier Moreno Sánchez. Eurochild’s Head of Advocacy Réka Tunyogi will present on how the new European Social Fund+ can support children in migration.

How can EU funds be best used to reduce the risks that children face at different stages of the migration journey? This roundtable aims to answer this question by providing an overview of how the next EU budget for 2021-2027 (known as the Multiannual Financial Framework) can ensure the rights of children in migration. The debate will be open to the contribution of the three EU institutions: Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and representatives from the Council of the European Union; as well as experts from civil society organisations.

Negotiations for the next EU budget between the three institutions of the EU, known as trilogues, are now underway and are expected to conclude late next year. This roundtable is therefore timely to gauge where funding priorities currently lie as well as identifying advocacy opportunities before the EU decides on final funding allocation.

The discussions of the roundtable stem from our new position paper (co-produced with Save the Children Europe and Terres des Hommes International Federation). Both the roundtable and the position paper have been funded by the Initiative for Children in Migration, an informal collaboration among civil society organisations who are involved in coordinated advocacy on EU law and policy affecting children in migration and the H&M Foundation.

Following the European Parliament roundtable, ChildHub will be hosting a roundtable on the same topic on December 12 at 2pm CET.

The webinar is free to attend and open to anyone interested by registering here.
