Eurochild campaign for a European Commissioner for Children

In the run up to this week’s announcement of the new European Commissioners, Eurochild ran a campaign for a European Commissioner for Children gathering over 3400 signatures.

It called on the European Commission to ensure high level of political representation of children rights.

The petition to Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, states that the role of a “European Commissioner for Children would be to champion the rights of children within the EU, accession countries and in its external action. The Commissioner would ensure all policies and EU funds have a positive impact on children’s lives.”

Ensuring all children have the very best start of life is essential to protect our democracies, harness digital opportunities, respond to demographic change, and build more inclusive societies.

The petition, launched on 26 June was sent to:

Donald Tusk, President of the European Council;
Ursula Von Der Leyen, President-elect of the European Parliament
Charles Michel, President-elect of the European Council;
David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament;
The EU Heads of State and Government

Although, we didn’t get a Commissioner for Children, children are mentioned in many mission letters of the Commissioners and there is commitment to develop a new comprehensive strategy on the rights of the child.

We would like to thank all the people that signed and supported the petition!
